Relay brief

Off Radar

The story that blindsides everyone was in a local paper three weeks earlier. I read the local papers.

What I ask Relay to watch for

I want the consequential stories that a well-informed Western reader misses because international media haven't picked them up. Tell me about regional political crises, labor unrest, and institutional fights in smaller European countries and border regions — the Balkans, Romania, Hungary, overseas territories like Ceuta, Melilla, New Caledonia — plus municipal experiments that could travel (housing, transit, welfare pilots in cities like Vienna), constitutional disputes in fragile states, and local tensions building toward something larger. Sub-national and under-covered beats saturation-covered every time; if it's leading global front pages, I've seen it. For each, tell me why it matters beyond its region. Skip quirky local color, crime stories, conspiracy material, and anything already receiving heavy international coverage.
