Forthcoming book adapts IFS parts work for maternal distress
New methods in relational psychology I could build from · Wednesday, 2 September 2026
Why it matters
The book could supply a new, population-specific parts-work vocabulary and session choreography for persona-based conversations, especially around identifying distressed or protective parts and shifting from internal conflict to befriending. Its value for implementation will depend on whether the full exercises specify sequencing, persona switching, and stopping rules beyond the publisher’s high-level description.
What happened
Jessica Tomich Sorci and Rebecca Geshuri are releasing *When Good Moms Feel Bad*, a practical adaptation of Internal Family Systems focused on mothers’ anxiety, anger, shame, guilt, ambivalence, and grief over lost aspects of identity. The book organizes these experiences around “Mom Parts” and presents exercises intended to help readers identify protective inner voices, reinterpret their intentions, and build self-trust. IFS creator Richard Schwartz endorses the approach; the book goes on sale September 10, 2026.
