German port workers weighing offer that could avert indefinite strike across six ports

Why it matters

This is the clearest escalation point yet in a dispute that has already disrupted operations across six German seaports: a worker rejection could move the conflict from warning strikes to a ballot for indefinite action. The consultation covers roughly 11,000 port workers, making its outcome a concrete indicator of whether the mobilization will deepen and threaten sustained freight movement.

What happened

About 11,000 workers at the ports of Hamburg, Bremerhaven, Bremen, Wilhelmshaven, Emden and Brake are considering a new 12-month wage offer after a fourth negotiating round. The proposal includes a retroactive 3.4% pay increase and additional payments, but falls short of ver.di’s demand for an 8.2% increase or at least €2.50 more per hour. Workers will consult through 14 September; if a majority rejects the offer, ver.di says it will hold a qualified membership ballot on indefinite industrial action. Two warning-strike rounds have already taken place, including 48 hours that left container cranes idle and disrupted vessel handling at Hamburg and the other five ports.
