Tens of thousands join Geneva G7 protest as police deploy 7,000 officers against 600 masked demonstrators

Why it matters
This crosses the user’s threshold for a major collective-action episode: a large, cross-organizational mobilization produced a violent escalation and a deployment of thousands of police across the Swiss-French summit area. The scale of the peaceful turnout also shows that the unrest was a smaller but consequential part of a broader protest movement, rather than the whole demonstration turning violent.
What happened
Tens of thousands of people gathered in Geneva for a No G7 protest organized by a coalition of 60 groups, citing women’s rights, better working conditions and environmental protection; the coalition called the G7 “illegitimate and outdated.” The demonstration was largely peaceful, but police said nearly 600 masked participants set a car and dumpster on fire, damaged storefronts and tore up paving stones. Police deployed nearly 7,000 officers and used water cannons and tear gas; the protest took place before the G7 summit in Evian, France, after Geneva authorities said France would not allow demonstrations near the summit zone.
