A 141 MWh battery has entered commercial operation alongside a Romanian solar plant

Why it matters

This is a real grid-scale deployment, not a pilot: storage is being added to an operating renewable plant and earning its operating case through market participation. It shows the capability is commercially accessible to utilities and large developers now, but not yet an ordinary-consumer technology; access depends on major capital, grid interconnection and wholesale-market conditions.

What happened

Econergy has begun commercial operations at the fully merchant 70 MW/141 MWh battery energy-storage system at its Părău 1 solar site in Brașov, Romania. The battery operates alongside the already-active 92 MW solar array, bringing the combined site to 162 MW across 113 hectares. Dedicated grid-import capacity allows it to charge during low or negative-price periods as well as store solar output that would otherwise be curtailed; the €85 million project is owned and operated by Econergy without contracted revenue protection.
