FinCEN flags $17.5 billion in suspected health-care-fraud activity across 5,700 reports
Gamed · Friday, 11 September 2026
Why it matters
The volume and one-year spread provide documented evidence of a large vulnerability across publicly funded health-care payment streams, with home health and several other provider categories repeatedly appearing in the reports. The release records an intelligence-gathering response, but does not identify the specific program-design flaw, completed prosecutions, recovered funds, or whether earlier warnings were ignored.
What happened
FinCEN said financial institutions filed more than 5,700 Bank Secrecy Act reports identifying approximately $17.5 billion in potentially health-care-fraud-linked suspicious activity between March 1, 2025, and February 28, 2026. The reported activity involved payments from federal and state programs and private insurers; home-health businesses appeared as the suspected provider in 20% of the reports. The $17.5 billion represents reported suspicious activity, not adjudicated fraud or confirmed taxpayer losses. Treasury said it is sharing the intelligence with law-enforcement partners, working through the White House Task Force to Eliminate Fraud, and seeking additional whistleblower tips.
