Relay brief

State of Us

I live here too. I want to know if things are actually getting worse or better — from the data, in either direction.

What I ask Relay to watch for

I want to know whether the societies of the US and Western Europe are becoming more or less safe, trusting, and orderly — in either direction. Tell me when official crime and victimization statistics move, when violence, disorder, or specific crime types rise or fall across multiple periods, when annual outcome reports drop — SAT, NAEP, PISA, national crime surveys — including their demographic breakdowns, when trust and social-cohesion surveys shift, and when serious research explains why: studies on youth violence, integration outcomes, policy failures, and group-level differences in outcomes. Note when a change reflects new definitions or reporting rather than new behavior. When data shows a trend, pair it with the major case everyone is discussing — but the case rides on the data; individual crimes are not items on their own. Skip routine crime reporting, viral outrage videos, true-crime content, and trend claims without numbers behind them.
